Spring 2014 Thematic Learning Community Offerings
What is a thematic learning community? A thematic learning community is a Freshman Seminar course (COL 105) that engages you by emphasizing a specific topic or theme embedded in the course. The theme or specific topic of the course is emphasized while you learn about and practice the behaviors of successful college students. The thematic learning communities being offered in Spring 2014 are listed below.
COL 105 (CRN: 51706) TR 10:10-11:35 a.m. ANDERSON CAMPUS
Do you feel like a little fish in a big sea? Do you believe you have little or no influence for making a difference? The COL 105 Improving America course will empower you to create change not only within yourself but in the communities you belong to. We will examine the world around us with perspectives ranging from the campus community to a global one. You will leave this course understanding the importance of community involvement in any context and at any level. So if you are interested in becoming a model citizen, making a positive change in your community, and impacting the lives of others, then this course is for you.
Calling ALL Military and Veterans: WE WANT YOU!
COL 105 (CRN: 51939) TR 11:10 a.m.-12:35 p.m.
Do you feel out of touch and maybe even a little out of place? College after the military is not an easy feat. Returning to civilian life is often challenging and throwing college in the mix can be especially hard. You need instructors that understand the personal challenges that are individual to you and your experience. This thematic freshman seminar is designed to help you step off of the battlefield and into the classroom successfully! This community is currently limited to active military and veterans.
COL 105 (CRN: 51642) MWF 11:15 a.m.-12:10 p.m.
Do you like movies? Of course, you do! Who doesn't? Frank Capra called film "one of the three universal languages," and he's right: movies speak to us. They have a lot to teach us, and in this learning community, we'll analyze the valuable life lessons shared with us through films from a variety of time periods and genres. Whether you like old movies or new, action flicks or romances, you'll love this class where we explore how we can move those lessons from reel to real to improve success in college and life.
Vocabulary: There's a Word for That!
COL 105 (CRN: 51612) TR 12:45-2:10 p.m.
In this themed community, we will look at the vocabulary of the college world, including words to help you successfully navigate your college career, as well as discipline-focused vocabulary to help you in your various studies. This class will also explore the ways our vocabulary changes and expands to reflect our cultures, historical events, and even pop culture, including the ever-changing world of slang. If you love language and you expect to write a plethora of papers this semester, come join us!
