History of Connect to College

Connect to College evolved in the tri-county region from the nationally recognized Gateway to College program, which was developed in 2000 by Portland Community College in Oregon.

In 2005, Tri-County Technical College and the school districts of Anderson, Oconee, and Pickens Counties received a three-year grant from Portland Community College (through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation) to replicate their award-winning Gateway to College program. In 2006, Tri-County and its partner school districts launched South Carolina's first Gateway to College program with fifty students. In the years that followed, the program continued to evolve and expand its service to at-risk youth in the tri-county region.

In September 2011, education leaders decided to formally recognize the local program's evolution by changing the name from Gateway to College to Connect to College, a decision that also necessitated separating from the Gateway to College National Network. The change went into effect on January 1, 2012.

Connect to College continues to provide invaluable opportunities for youth in Anderson, Oconee, and Pickens Counties who need and deserve a second chance for an education and a bright future.
