Types of Grants

A Grant is a type of Financial Aid that does is not repaid unless student fails to complete the requirements of education. See Paying Back of Federal Funds.

Pell Grant

  • Federal entitlement program
  • Awarded based on FAFSA information
  • Maximum annual award varies each year 
  • Awarded based on need and number of credit hours taken

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)

  • Federal program awarded to the neediest students
  • Awarded based on FAFSA information
  • Must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours per semester
  • Award amount varies annually

South Carolina Need-Based Grant

  • State funded program awarded to the neediest students
  • Awarded based on FAFSA information
  • Must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours per semester
  • Award amount varies annually
  • Further SCNBG Information

Lottery Tuition Assistance

  • State funded program awarded to South Carolina residents
  • Must meet residency requirements
  • Awarded by completing the FAFSA application
  • High School students or students with Bachelor's degrees do not need to complete the FAFSA. These students complete a Lottery Tuition Assistance waiver form (PDF) and return it to Financial Aid in Miller Hall.
  • Applies to cost of tuition only
  • Must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours per semester
  • Does not cover Continuing Education classes or non-credit classes
  • Award amount varies annually

SC National Guard CAP Program

  • The South Carolina National Guard College Assistance Program (CAP) is administered by the SC Commission on Higher Education and may be awarded to qualified members of the South Carolina National Guard.
  • Awards, when combined with other financial aid, can never exceed the Cost of Attendance.
