Emergency Procedures

Level 1 Emergency:

Life threatening illness/injury - Call 911 then call Campus Safety to alert them of the nature of the problem and the 911 call (Remember to dial 9 first, if dialing from a campus phone)

Level 2 Safety and Health Incidents:

Bomb Threat - Try to remain calm
*Via phone - note time; try to get caller to talk and give details of bomb location/ reason; listen for background noise, possible age, and gender of caller. Report to Campus Safety immediately
*Via e-mail - immediately call Campus Safety, do not delete email or start any other process
* Via mail - immediately call Campus Safety, limit handling of the envelope and letter

Explosion - Call Campus Safety at ext. 1800. If Campus Safety advises, activate the building fire alarm and evacuate the building. Close but do not lock doors. Assist any disabled students and/or employees to stairwell and notify building custodian (orange vest) of the person’s location.

Fire - Call Campus Safety at ext. 1800. If campus Safety advises, activate the building fire alarm and evacuate the building. Close but do not lock doors. Assist any disabled students and/or employees to stairwell and notify building custodian (orange vest) of the person’s location.

Fumes/Vapors - Evacuate the area and call Campus Safety at ext. 1800 if an emergency. If not and emergency call Physical Plant at ext. 1769.

Flooding - Call Campus Safety at ext. 1800. Tell them the building, floor, room, degree of flooding and potential damage due to the flood.

Hazardous Substance Spills - Call Campus Safety at ext. 1800, then call ext. 1769 to notify the Physical Plant. Provide building and room number of spill. Evacuate the area of spill. Seal off area to minimize additional exposure. Keep all people who were present at spill in isolated area to insure there is no spread of contamination.

Non life-threatening illness/injury - Call Campus Safety at ext. 1800. Seek the nearest Biohazard Spill kit.

    Bookstore - two kits
    Campus Safety Office - two kits
    Health Science Building - four kits
    Miller Hall - Information Center one kit
    Oconee Hall - Room 105 two kits
    Pickens Hall - Room 102A one kit

Nuclear Disaster - You will be notified of any such emergency with specific instructions to follow

Severe Weather -

    Tornado- The tornado siren will be activated. You should remain indoors and seek immediate shelter away from windows and doors

    Snow or Ice- Before work hours, listen to local news and/or call the College and use Option 3 on the main greeting to determine if College is closed: If so, do not report to work unless you have been previously identified as essential personnel in the Hazardous Weather Policy.
    During work hours you will be notified of any College closing and/or dismissal

Violent/Criminal Behavior - Call Campus Safety at ext. 1800, provide them with nature of behavior, description of offender and location.

Level 3 Infrastructure Failures:

Mechanical/ Utility Failure - Call the Physical Plant at ext. 1769 during normal work hours and Campus Safety at ext. 1800 after-hours, weekends or holidays.

Technology/Information Services - Call the Help Desk at ext. 1779

Telecommunications - Call Kevin Steele at ext. 1858
