Student Leadership Council Honors Brett Johnson with Student Advocate Award

PENDLETON, SC – Brett Johnson, an English instructor in Tri-County Technical College’s Arts and Sciences Division, received the Student Advocate award in recognition and appreciation of his outstanding vision, commitment to excellence, and dedication to student success.

Each year the award is presented by the Student Leadership Council at spring convocation.

One of Johnson’s students said: “He's just such an amazing teacher. I had him last fall semester and I purposefully built my entire spring schedule around his only available class just so I could be in it. You can tell that he really has a passion for literature when listening to him teach and it just makes his mentorship all the more strong.”

The student added that Johnson goes above and beyond for his students in ways that aren’t necessarily part of his job description.  “He’s a very understanding and compassionate professor who recognizes that students sometimes deal with difficult things outside of school while still encouraging us to stay accountable and do our best work. He cares about his students as people and genuinely wants them to succeed in life. I truly believe with all my heart that he's the best teacher I've had at Tri-County, and perhaps even my life. I couldn't think of any teacher at Tri-County more deserving of the Student Advocate Award.”

Johnson joined TCTC as a full-time English instructor in 2014 after two years as an adjunct.  He also worked as a writing tutor for the College from 2012 to 2013. He holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Winthrop University and a master’s degree.in English from Clemson University.  He is also a member of the Foothills Writer's Guild, serving as a judge for its creative writing contests.
