Who You Become Is What Matters Most, Naomi Lett Tells TCTC Graduates
PENDLETON, SC – “The most important part of this milestone isn’t just what you’ve accomplished, but who you’ve become in the process,” Naomi Lett, chief executive officer for the South Carolina Technical College System Foundation, told Tri-County Technical College’s Class of 2025 in her keynote address at summer commencement. The ceremony was held August 4 at Clemson University’s Littlejohn Coliseum.
“Who you become is what matters most,” said Lett, who, as CEO, works closely with the Foundation’s board of trustees to steer the growth of the organization and expand its strategic programs which address critical workforce and higher education needs in South Carolina.
She added: “No matter the goal you achieve in life, your place there is temporary. Who you become through your experiences – someone who persists, someone who believes, someone who seeks higher ground and does whatever it takes to get there – that’s what stays with you for the rest of your life,” said Lett, an accomplished policy and innovation professional with more than 20 years of experience at the local, state, and national levels. A passionate advocate for workforce development and innovation, Lett has dedicated her career to advancing policies and initiatives that improve lives and strengthen communities.
“Things are rarely what they seem,” said Lett, who told graduates she shares a similar journey with some of them. “There’s always more to the story than you can see,” said Lett. “The bio you see in print only tells a small part of the story. I grew up eating powdered milk and government cheese. I lived in seven different foster homes. I changed schools 12 times and nearly failed out of high school. It took me seven years to graduate from college, and I didn’t truly find my path until my early thirties. When you look out into the world, know that no one is what they appear to be. There is always more to the story than you can see. If you compare your insides to their outside, your story will be incomplete,” she said.
Lett advised the graduates to go slowly, go fast – just keep going.
“It does not matter how quickly you arrive, as long as you keep going. I quit college more times than I can count, but I always came back. I knew there was something I was meant to be, and if I quit, I’d never become it. Each time, I looked at my life and asked myself, ‘Is this where I want my story to stop?’ The answer was always no, so I had to keep going, I had to keep trying,” she said
“If you are moving, you are winning. Whatever the dream you hold inside your heart, don’t ever tell yourself you cannot get there, because you absolutely can. Today is that day for some of you. For others, there may be farther to go to arrive at your dream. You can achieve anything you want in life as long as you don’t sit down, as long as you don’t stop trying,” she said.
Lett reminded the graduates that they deserve the space they occupy.
“I spent much of my life suffering from imposter syndrome, feeling like I didn’t belong – like I was sitting in rooms I didn’t deserve to be in. I thought the difficulties I endured meant I shouldn’t be there, when, in fact, it meant that I did. I fought for every inch I gained in life. The irony is that the very thing I believed made me unsuitable was the exact reason I deserved to be there,” she said.
A graduate of James Madison University, Lett began her career as a Peace Corps volunteer in Niger, West Africa, where she worked on sustainable agriculture and community health initiatives. Her Peace Corps service provided invaluable experience in grassroots development, cross-cultural collaboration, and sustainable community-building—experiences that would shape her professional journey.
Lett’s career in South Carolina includes work with the United Way Association of South Carolina, where she spearheaded initiatives in workforce support, financial stability for students, and child welfare. Later Lett served as the senior director of state policy and advocacy at United Way Worldwide.
“Today, I know I’m a boss lady, and I deserve to be in every room I sit in. So do you. Remember that. You earned the seat you occupy today – the seat of a college graduate.”
