COL 103 – All You Need to Know!

What is COL 103?

  • It’s a college-level course called “College Skills”. It is designed especially for high school students who will be first-generation college students to help them be successful in college.

 

What is a First-Generation College Student?

  • A student whose parents (birth or adoptive) have not earned a bachelor’s degree​ OR
  • A student who lived with only one parent before age 18, and that parent does not have a bachelor’s degree​ OR
  • A student who did not live with or receive support from their birth or adoptive parents before the age of 18​.

 

How will COL 103 Benefit My Student?

  • The course teaches essential success skills needed not only for freshman year but throughout your student’s entire college experience. Here are examples of what’s covered:

o   Academic learning strategies (study and test-taking skills)

o   Personal well-being, resilience, and stress management

o   Critical thinking and problem-solving

o   Success strategies for one’s chosen major and career field

o   Effective communication and collaborative methods when working with peers, professors, and others

 

How Can I Support My Student in COL 103?

  • Parents and other persons of support can help their student in several important ways – and we’re going to give you specific examples throughout the semester. (Watch for upcoming DE Team Talks for more info!)
