Betty Keys Named Early Childhood Development Department Head

PENDLETON --- Betty Keys of Belton has joined Tri-County Technical College as its Early Childhood Development department head. The program is designed to prepare those entering the field of child care and/or those currently employed but seeking additional training.

Mrs. Keys was the curriculum coordinator for the Center for Child Care Career Development at Greenville Technical College from 1997 - 98. She also has served as an adjunct faculty member at Tri-County and Greenville Technical Colleges. From 1982 - 94, she was a teacher and director of the Weekday Early Education program at the First Baptist Church in Belton.

She is a member of the Southern Early Childhood Association, and currently she serves as the organization's District V president. She also is a member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children and the South Carolina Technical Educ ation Association.

For the past 14 years, she has led workshops and training sessions for early care and education professionals throughout the state. Some of these organization include the Center for Child Care Career Development, The South Carolina Baptist Convention, Anderson District II Career and Technology Center, McLeod Hospital and Life Long Learning of the Greenville County School District.

She is the author of a training resource guide for the Center for Child Care Career Development, which administers training through the state's technical colleges and awards an early childhood credential.

Mrs. Keys is a graduate of Columbia College and the University of South Carolina where she earned a B. A. in English education. She also earned an M.A. in early childhood education from Furman University.

She and her husband, Marshall, have two children.
