Tri-County's Student Government Association Receives Outstanding College Trophy at Student Leadership Conference

PENDLETON --- Tri-County Technical College's Student Government Association (SGA) leaders accepted a trophy for "most outstanding college" at the S.C. Technical College's Student Leadership Development conference held October 25 - 27 at Myrtle Beach.

This is the fifth time Tri-County's SGA has taken home the outstanding college trophy. The College was judged on school spirit, unity, leadership and participation during the conference. In addition, for the second consecutive year, the College won be st in competition for its scrapbook chronicling the year's events.

"Our success as a team stems from the support we receive from everyone on campus -- beginning with Dr. Garrison," said Deborah Holder, of Liberty, SGA president. "We're very lucky because from day one, our officers have worked as a group."

"We brought home a sense of unity among our peers and the pride of being a member of a team," said Sarah Winton, of Anderson, SGA vice president. "The scrapbook took us weeks to compile. We couldn't have done it without the help of faculty and staff."

Much of the scrapbook focuses on fundraisers and community involvement. "We like to give back to the community through public service events, such as last year's Kidprint and our adoption of Special Olympics athletes from the tri-counties," said Winton.

"We're a 'we' college, not an 'I' team," said Winton.

Also representing the college were SGA leaders Angela Rowland, of Easley, Debbie Lanman, of Pendleton; and Juston Ellenburg, of Pickens; and Minority Student Association leaders Crystal McDaniel, of Anderson; Sheryl Sweat, of Anderson; and Demetrius Car son, of Anderson. SGA advisors Vinson Burdette and Andrea Hall accompanied the group.

Participants attended seminars which focused on motivation, teamwork, managing multiple priorities, community service and stress management.

Fifteen of the South Carolina's 16 technical college were represented at the Student Leadership Conference which was sponsored by the S.C. Board for Technical and Comprehensive Education and the directors of Student Activities from the state's technical colleges.
