Tri-County Offers Equine Management Classes

PENDLETON --- The following classes will be offered by Tri-County Technical College:

Equine Management

Herbal Supplements and Alternative Therapies for Equine Health, September 7 – 28, Tuesdays, 7 – 9 p.m., $45. Learn how to assess a horse's coat, eyes, hoof condition, body weight, and alertness to determine a general physical condition. You will review herbal supplements which could contribute to regaining a glossy hair coat, strong piable hoof texture and proper weight for age and use. The purpose and use of aromatherapy and light muscle massage will be reviewed and demonstrated.

Business Records and Financial Management, September 11 - 18, Saturdays, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., $45. This course will cover maintaining breeding and health records, records for dealing with the public (boarding contracts, breeding contracts, invoices, etc. ) financial records and tax records.

Fundamentals of Equine Management, October 2, 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., and October 3, 1 – 6 p.m., $45. This course provides a foundation for the certificate program by presenting a history of the equine industry in South Carolina, along with information on career opportunities, breed identification and correct terminology. The course consists of classroom lecture and demonstration, pre-purchase exam lab, and field trip to an equine facility.

Health Management, November 13 and 14, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m., $55. Participants will learn to observe vital signs to distinguish normal/abnormal conditions and to recognize signs of illness, such as colic.

Horticulture and Landscaping Classes

Unit VI: Advanced Greenhouse Propagation, August 26 - September 16, Thursdays, 6 – 10 p.m., $55. Learn plant identification, proper planting location, soil pH, spacing, proper pruning, and use of annuals and perennials in the landscape design. Students also will be engaged in greenhouse project work.

Ornamental Shrubs and Trees for South Carolina, September 30 - October 21, Thursdays, 6 – 10 p.m., $45.

Turfgrass Management Certificate Classes

Drainage and Irrigation, September 7 – 28, Tuesdays, 6:30 – 9:30 p.m., $75.

Preparing Water Gardens for Winter, September 23, Thursdays, 6 – 9 p.m., $25., B.J. Skelton Career Center, Easley.

Soils and Fertilizers, October 5 - 26, Tuesdays, 6:30 – 9:30 p.m., $75, B.J. Skelton Career Center, Easley.

Integrated Pest Management, November 9 - 30, Tuesdays, 6:30 – 9:30 p.m., $75, B.J. Skelton Career Center, Easley.
