Three Faculty/Staff Members to Represent Tri-County
Technical College at SCTEA Competition

PENDLETON --- Three faculty/staff members have been selected as Tri-County Technical College's nominees for the South Carolina Technical Education Association's (SCTEA) outstanding educators of the year.
Executive Vice President Roslyn J. Mauldin, of Clemson, is the College's outstanding administrator; Polly Fehler, of Seneca, associate degree nursing instructor, for outstanding professor; and Caroline Scharer, of Easley, library director, for outstanding support staff.
They have been nominated by fellow SCTEA members and will be recognized at the SCTEA conference in the spring of 2000.
A veteran educator and administrator, Mrs. Mauldin joined Tri-County in 1972 as an instructor in the secretarial science (now Office Systems Technology) department and became head of the department the
following year. She was named chair of the Comprehensive Studies Division in 1980 and added chairmanship of the Business and Human Services Division to her responsibilities in 1983. She was named executive vice president in 1986.
She is the 1975 recipient of the Presidential Medallion for Staff Excellence. She receive her bachelor's degree in business education from the University of Georgia and her master's degree in guidance from Clemson University.
She is a charter member of the Foothills Chapter of Professional Secretaries International. She is a member of the Clemson First Methodist Church, where she is a former trustee and former secretary of the administrative board.
She and her husband, Tom, live in Clemson.
Mrs. Fehler joined Tri-County in 1990 as lead instructor in maternity nursing and child care for the associate degree nursing program, and assumed the title of department head in 1998. Prior to joining the College, she worked as a nurse at St. Mary's Hospital in Athens, Georgia, in the neonatal intensive care unit. She also worked in the USAF Nurse Corps from 1980 88 and retired as a captain.
She holds an M.S. in maternal child nursing, a B.S. in nursing from Northern Illinois University and an associate in science degree from Kishwaukee College.
Her honors and awards include Phi Kappa Phi, Omicron Delta Kappa, Sigma Theta Tau and USAF commendation medals. In 1995 she received a National Institute for Staff and Organization Development Excellence Award in recognition of her outstanding contributions to teaching and learning.
In 1992 she served as an expert witness for a neonatal legal case, and since 1993 has been a textbook reviewer for Addison-Wesley Publishers.
She and her husband, Gene, live in Seneca.
Ms. Scharer joined Tri-County in 1995 as the College's information literacy librarian and was promoted the next year to her current position. She holds a bachelor's degree from Wofford College and a master's degree in information and library science from the University of South Carolina. Her professional experience includes working as a technical service librarian at Presbyterian and Wofford Colleges and as a reference librarian at Converse College.
She serves as chair of the College's Planning Work Group and is a
member of the Instructional Affairs Committee. Since 1995 she has administered three grants for the College. This year she served as grant director of the "Library Services to Distance Learners" grant awarded by the State Board for Technical and Comprehensive Education. She served as grant director in 1997 for the South Carolina Assistive Technology project funded by the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. She began her work at Tri-County as administrator for the three-year Funds for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) grant for a project to integrate information literacy into the technical college curriculum.
She serves on the board of directors of AppNet and on the by-laws committee of the S.C. Library Association. She is a member of the Piedmont Library Association.
She is chair-elect of the S.C. Information Library Services Consortium and the Library Peer Group for S.C. Technical Colleges.
Earlier this month she delivered a presentation at the Distance 2000 seminar in Myrtle Beach. In addition, she has presented at the National Conference for the Adult Learner and the International Community College Workforce Development Conference. She will be a presenter at the upcoming SCTEA conference.
