Tri-County’s MLT Grads Report a 100% Passing Score on
National Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathology

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 12/13/2004
(By Lisa Garrett)

PENDLETON --- Tri-County’s recent Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) graduates report a 100 percent passing score on the National Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP).

The MLT (ASCP) is the most prestigious credential a medical laboratory technician can place after his or her name.

During the exam, students are tested on five areas: chemistry, microbiology, hematology, immunohematology, and body fluids. There are 100 multiple choice questions to cover these five major areas of science.

Department Head Dallas Jones and Polly Kay, MLT instructor, help students to better prepare for the exam in several ways during the two years of study. "During clinical study, the hospitals emphasize the technical aspects, such as instrumentation and quality control and we emphasize theory in the classroom. If students learn both, they will be successful on the registry," said Mrs. Jones.

"I'm very pleased with the passing rate of our students," she added. "By the time our students are seniors, they are on a mission. They are very strong and committed to the program. Placing the credentials after their name is most important."

When graduates pass the national registry exam, they must earn 36 hours of continuing education units within three years to maintain these credentials, added Mrs. Jones.

The Medical Laboratory Technology department is accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education Accreditation in cooperation with the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences.
