Have Understanding and Appreciation of Life's Good Things,
President Booth Tells Tri-County's Summer Grads

CONTACT: LISA GARRETT, EXT. 1506

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 8/10/2004
(By Lisa Garrett)

PENDLETON --- Technical and academic competence are only half the equation for success, Tri-County Technical College's President Ronnie L. Booth told the 230 graduates during his summer commencement address, adding that the understanding and appreciation of life's good things play just as important a role.

"I hope we have instilled in you technical and academic competence so that you can be successful economically but, more important, I hope we at the College have instilled in you and lived out in front of you in the classrooms, labs, and in our offices, the traits and characteristics that really matter and that you which you choose to emulate," said Dr. Booth, who became Tri-County's third president July 2003.

Dr. Booth referenced two relatives, an uncle and a grandfather, whom he has admired since childhood -- "people who have lived a pretty good life but not by the measures we typically use." One is Uncle Coy, who left the fourth grade at age 16, cannot read, has never driven anything but a mule or a bicycle and worked in the tobacco fields around Conway.

"By the world's standards, he has lived a life not many would want to live. He has been poor his entire life by all economic measures but never realized it. He did not know he was supposed to worry about things and he never has," explained Dr. Booth.

"Would I want to live my life the same way that Uncle Coy has lived his? No, but he is not to be pitied. He has lived a life worth emulating in other ways," he told the graduates.

As did his late grandfather, Sam B., who resided in a lapped siding house in Horry County with no indoor toilet and who worked for the Civilian Conservation Corp and later owned his own farm where he plowed 40 acres of bottom land barefoot with a two-mule team.

"All of you have accomplished something that neither Uncle Coy nor my grandfather ever did. You each have attained a degree, diploma or certificate that will assist you in accomplishing economic goals and obtaining possessions that were not within their grasp. You have so many more opportunities that they are hard to fathom.

"As you go from here to a job or further education, I hope you eventually understand and accomplish what is really important. I hope you have as good a life as Uncle Coy and Sam B. Yes, they each certainly experienced many difficulties physically and otherwise, but I would rather have their life than that of some, whom the world deems as a success, because many who have position, power, influence and an abundance of material possessions are really quite miserable. They are because they do not possess what really matters.
Such as:
Relationships with people you love and who love you
An enjoyment of simple pleasures
A reputation for being honest and living by your word
An appreciation for the benefits of hard work
An appreciation of good conversation
The pleasure of enjoying the fruit of your labor in peace
A home that is a place of comfort and security
Having time to reflect on life and all that it means
Having someone to look to you as a hero, a model, a mentor

"I do not want to be measured by my job, my connections or the trappings of my life," said Dr. Booth. "I much rather hope that what I have said about Uncle Coy and Sam B., the deep understanding and appreciation of life's good things, will be said about me. I hope you will seek the same."

Following the address, President Booth and other College officials presented degrees, diplomas and certificates to the graduates.
