(By Lisa Garrett)

PENDLETON --- Tri-County Technical College will soon have the capability to take laptop computers to local businesses and industry, thanks to $60,253 grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission.

This mobile equipment will allow Tri-County instructors to conduct computer classes for up to six employees at work sites and therefore be more responsive to training needs.

A major advantage of the mobile training laboratory is that employees won't have to leave their work site, and classes can be held at more flexible times. There will be no travel time for associates, and Tri-County instructors can conduct classes for varying shifts.

The grant money also will upgrade equipment and software for the Business Training Center Microcomputer Lab and the Office Skills Labs which are located at the Anderson Mall classroom facility and on campus. Computer workstations, printers, medical transcribers and scanners will equip the Office Skills Labs, the Networking Testing Lab and the Microcomputer Lab.

The Office Skills Labs offer self-paced classes during morning, afternoon and evening hours in an environment suited to independent adult students.

Around 1,000 students train at the Office Skills Labs annually. The Anderson Mall classroom serves around 350 persons monthly.
