PENDLETON
--- Tri-County's first male Medical Laboratory Technology graduate (Class
of 1972) was honored with an annual award highlighting his dedication
to his alma mater.
Dr. Lewis Wilson, of Liberty, received the Distinguished Alumni Award
at the College's annual awards ceremony. The recipient of this award
must have been awarded a degree, diploma or certificate from Tri-County;
must have graduated at least one year ago; and must have made significant
contributions to the College, the Association or the community.
"I'm very proud to receive this award. It's an honor to be associated
with the College. Without Tri-County, I wouldn’t be where I am today,"
said Dr. Wilson, who is the owner of Liberty Dental Care in Liberty.
"The College taught me how to be a student, which enabled me to
go on and earn higher degrees," said Dr. Wilson, who also earned
a University Transfer degree at Tri-County before transferring to the
College of Charleston where he received a B.A. in Biology. He went on
to earn a DMD from the Medical University of South Carolina. He has
practiced dentistry since 1991
Although more than three decades have passed since he graduated, he
continues a strong relationship with Tri-County. "The College gave
me so much, and I want to give back all I can," he added.
Dr. Wilson has participated in at least six of the College's Alumni
Association golf tournaments and has contributed more than $1,000 in
cash sponsorships and prizes to the tournaments. He also began making
contributions to the College's Foundation in 1995 in support of health
education.
"Dr. Wilson has always been a strong supporter of Tri-County,"
said Donna Shannon, Dental Assisting department head. "He served
on the Dental Assisting advisory board for many years and employs three
Tri-County graduates in his dental practice. He encourages the hiring
of Tri-County graduates not only at his own practice but in his networking
relationships in the three counties."
Dr. Wilson's community involvement includes serving as president of
the Greater Liberty Chamber of Commerce and on the governing board of
the Liberty Lions Club. He is a member of the American Dental Association
the South Carolina Dental Association, the Piedmont District Dental
Society, the Greenville County Dental Society and the Tri-County Dental
Society. He also is a member of the Academy of General Dentistry and
the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. He received the PSI OMEGA
Dental Fraternity SC Alumni Chapter Award in 1991 and the Undergraduate
Certificate of Merit from the Pierre Fauchard Academy of Dentistry.
He and his wife, B.J., who serves as office manager for the dental
practice, reside in Liberty.
