Captain John Skipper Receives Adjunct Faculty
Presidential Award at Tri-County Technical College

(By Lisa Garrett)

PENDLETON --- John Skipper, captain of Support Services with the Anderson County Sheriff's Department, is the recipient of the 2000 Adjunct Faculty Presidential Award at Tri-County Technical College.

This award is given annually at the faculty/staff convocation to the adjunct faculty member who is recognized for excellence in teaching, who has consistently high student evaluations and who supports the philosophy and goals of the College.

Captain Skipper has been teaching criminal justice continuing education classes within Tri-County's Business and Human Services Division since 1992. As the College developed its private security training courses for the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED), Captain Skipper was an instrumental part of the team, developing and later teaching Levels II and II Firearms Instructor Training course. In addition he has taught other continuing education courses, such as Concealed Weapons Certification and firearms training courses for the Constable and Reserve Police Officer Training classes.

As captain of support services, he is responsible for aviation, training, records, and grants. "Although this is full time work, he makes himself available to us for meetings and planning sessions and to his students both during class and after completion," said President Don C. Garrison when presenting him with the award.

"The depth of his law enforcement experience adds immeasurably to the credibility of the instructional programs of which he is a part," wrote the College's Criminal Justice Department Head Lew Holton in his nomination of Captain Skipper. "He is rated consistently excellent by students who participate in his classes. He has an easy rapport with students, a professional approach to teaching and always a helping hand to lend to students, fellow instructors and staff alike. When criminal justice practitioners from around the State put a face on the continuing education instruction they received at Tri-County, most often it is Captain John Skipper's face they envision," said Mr. Holton.

"Captain Skipper goes way beyond what it is expected of an adjunct faculty member – he takes the initiative to help in all areas of preparation, presentation and follow-up of a course. He is well respected in Anderson County and known to be a true professional," said Dr. Garrison.

In addition to his work at Tri-County, he works closely with the five public school districts in the county by writing grants, giving presentations, and assisting them in other ways.

Captain Skipper and his wife, Judy, have one son, Chandler.
