Medical Assisting Program to be Offered this Fall at Tri-County

CONTACT: TAMMY MORTON, EXT. 2242

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 5/5/2000
(By Lisa Garrett)

PENDLETON --- Medical Assisting, a one-year diploma program designed to train students to become multifunctional health care workers in physicians' and medical offices, will be offered on the Tri-County Technical College campus this fall.

More medical assistants are employed by practicing physicians than any other type of allied health personnel, said Tammy Morton, department head for the new program. The College is accepting applications for enrollment in the program, and she urges interested persons to contact her or the College's Admissions Office for more information.

There is a big demand for the multi-skilled medical assistant, said Mrs. Morton. There are more than 200 doctor's offices in the three county area, and the Employment Security Commission predicts that jobs for medical assistants will increase by 39.01 percent by 2005.

The program will prepare students to assist other health care providers with examination and treatment of patients. They also will perform routine tasks required to help offices run smoothly, said Mrs. Morton. Specifically, students are trained to perform basic office procedures, insurance filing and laboratory tests.

For more information about the Medical Assisting program, contact Mrs. Morton at Ext. 2242 at one of these numbers: Anderson County, 225-2250; Oconee County -- 882-4412; Pickens County -- 859-7033; or Clemson/Anderson/Pendleton -- 646-8361. Persons who are deaf, hard of hearing or speech disabled should call TDD/VOICE 1-800-735-2905.
