PENDLETON --- Sgt. Nate Heard, a Clemson police officer and certified
instructor, will teach a new self-defense course for women on the Tri-County
Technical College campus.
Sgt. Heard will teach Self-Defense for Women – R.A.D. System (Rape
Aggression Defense Program) beginning October 18. The R.A.D. system
is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques. It is
a comprehensive course for women that begins with awareness, prevention,
risk reduction and avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of
hands-on defense training. R.A.D. is not a martial arts program.
The course teaches women to make them better prepared for attacks by
capitalizing on their strengths and identifying their weaknesses. The
defense moves taught in the class include blocking, basic punches, kicks
and other ways to get out of an attacker's grip. They emphasize the
body as a woman's best weapon, including the importance of balance,
body stance and screaming for help.
The R.A.D. System of physical defense is currently being taught at
many colleges and universities. The program was developed 10 years ago
by Larry Nadeau, a West Virginia policeman.
The class, which will run through October 20, culminates in an attack
simulation where women put the skills they've learned to use on heavily-padded
mats. The cost of the class is $49 per person (includes workbook/reference
manual).
