FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 8/4/2000
(By Lisa Garrett)

PENDLETON --- Student Support Services, an academic support program at Tri-County Technical College since 1978, has received a $232,863 grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

Through the TRIO program, this federal grant will fully fund Student Support Services to encourage and assist students in remaining in and graduating from Tri-County Technical College by offering academic counseling, personal and career counseling, tutoring, and educational and cultural enrichment activities.

Student Support Services is now serving 161 curriculum students and providing tutorial assistance to 50 students per month in one or more classes, said Cindy Trimmier-Lee, coordinator of the program. The program also offers study skills services to help participants with goal setting, time management, note taking, test taking and other personal management skills.

TRIO's Student Support Services also serves university transfer students. These services include easing the transition for students transferring from Tri-County to four-year colleges and universities; advising and monitoring students while they are at Tri-County; tutoring; and providing liaison services with the senior institutions. Through this initiative, 50 Tri-County university transfer students are receiving special services to aid in the transfer to four-year colleges.

The TRIO programs are funded under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965. The other two services are Educational Talent Search and Upward Bound. The TRIO programs are funded entirely by grants awarded by the U.S. Department of Education.
