- Always walk facing on-coming traffic if no sidewalk is available.
- Be cautious of drivers that stop to talk to you.
- Be aware of your surroundings! Potential offenders look for victims who give the appearance of not paying attention and not being alert.

- If driving on campus, always stop for pedestrians.
- If walking on campus, do not assume that drivers see you or that they will stop for you while you cross the street.
- If you are being followed, cross the street, change directions, keep looking back so the person knows you cannot be surprised. Enter an occupied building or look for a crowded area.
- If you find yourself in a situation with an assailant, do not be afraid to loudly call attention to your situation. Yelling "Help!" or "Get your hands off me!" might be effective ways to scare off your attacker.
- Keep emergency phone numbers handy in case of intrusion, fire, or other emergency.
- Take time to familiarize yourself with building evacuation and fire safety plans.
