Carol Clarke Delivers Spring Commencement Address
Clemson, SC – Carol Clarke, former WYFF news anchor, delivered the keynote address at Tri-County Technical College’s spring commencement when 381 graduates received degrees, diplomas and certificates at Littlejohn Coliseum on May 11.
“Today you join the ranks of those who keep the world running,” said Clarke, an award-winning journalist who for the better part of 40 years served the Upstate of South Carolina, western North Carolina, and northeast Georgia as a main news anchor for WYFF News 4, the NBC affiliate in Greenville, South Carolina. Clarke co-anchored the six and 11 o'clock newscasts for WYFF-TV weekdays and fronted "4 Your Health" as the station's health and medical reporter until her retirement in December 2025.
“Tri-County Technical College is a special place. This is a college where people don’t just learn theories, they learn how to do things. Real things. Useful things. Things that help children grow, protect communities, heal bodies, care for animals, and keep the world from falling apart. And let’s be honest. When things do start falling apart—whether it’s a system failure, a medical emergency, or a moment of crisis—I want a Tri-County graduate nearby,” said Clarke.
“I can count scores of times a Tri-County-trained technician fixed a glitchy laptop, repaired a faulty microphone, or made sure the TV signal made it on the air. There is something unique about this college. Tri-County doesn’t just get students ready to enter the workforce. It prepares them for reality,” Clarke said.
Clarke told the graduates they are stepping into a world that needs their skills and expertise more than ever. “Employers desperately need workers who can actually do things. And they need people who aren’t behind the curve. They need people who are the curve. That’s you,” Clarke said.
“You’re the people who will keep hospitals running, children safe and learning, animals healthy, communities secure, networks protected and systems functioning. You’re the folks who will build, repair, innovate and improve the world around you. That’s what this education gives you. The ability to creatively think of solutions. The ability to see what others miss. That ability will take you far,” Clarke said.
Clarke told the graduates that success isn’t a job title, a salary, or a promotion.
“Success is the ability to do. To look at something broken, be it a machine or a process, and say, ‘I can fix this.’ Success is the confidence to try, the courage to learn, the willingness to keep going when things get hard, the humility to ask for help, and the generosity to offer it. Success is the willingness to ‘figure it out.’ And you’ve proven you already can,” Clarke said.
“You’re the people who turn problems into projects and projects into solutions. That’s pretty powerful. So go out there and build something worth remembering. Go out there and fix what’s broken. Create something that didn’t exist before. Go out there and show the world what a Tri-County Technical College graduate can do. Congratulations Class of 2026. The world is waiting for you.”
Following the speech, Tri-County President Galen DeHay and other College officials presented degrees, diplomas and certificates to the following graduates:
