The Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) Level 1 Quality Control (QC) Technician Course is intended to assure an understanding of the requirements for inspection of asphalt materials at the plant, proper testing procedures, and related SCDOT specifications. Individuals who complete this course will be certified to perform HMA Level 1 QC Technician duties on SCDOT projects. Each participant is responsible for performing laboratory quality control tests during the course, demonstrating competency of these testing procedures individually, and performing mathematical calculations related to working as a HMA Level 1 QC Technician. The instructors for the courses are made up of knowledgeable asphalt industry consultants, academia, contractors and SCDOT representatives.
To become certified, participants are required to attend a three-and-a-half (3 ½) day course, pass a written exam (open book and open notes) with a score of 80% or higher, and individually demonstrate proficiency in each of the following laboratory procedures (must score 80% or higher on each testing station):
Participants are expected to be familiar with performing all of these procedures prior to attending the class. Instructors will NOT demonstrate the lab procedures prior to the individual demonstrations by the students.
