Special Circumstances

If you have an extenuating circumstance or need additional financial assistance, please read through the various options below. We encourage you to contact our office so that we can assist you in determining what your options are and the best way to proceed.

Special Condition or Review of Income

If you have had a significant change in circumstances, since you filed the FAFSA or from the tax year required on FAFSA, the financial aid office does have the discretion to review a Special Condition packet. Below is an example of some of the circumstances that may warrant a special condition review. This is not an exhaustive list and we encourage you to contact our office to discuss your circumstances.

  • Recent unemployment (in the last 3-6 months)
  • Significant change or reduction in income (Possibly due to unemployment, a global pandemic or other circumstance).
  • Medical, dental, or other expenses not covered by insurance

 *Please contact our office to request a packet and discuss what is needed. Also, be aware that there is no guarantee that all circumstances will be granted and/or all packets approved.

Dependency Override

If you unable to provide parental information on the FAFSA, please contact the financial aid office to discuss your circumstances and the possibility of a dependency override. Below is an example of some of the circumstances that may warrant a dependency override. This is not an exhaustive list and we encourage you to contact our office to discuss your options.

  • Court ordered custody of someone other than a biological parent
  • Abusive or unsafe family environment
  • Abandoned or neglected by parents
  • Unable to locate either biological parent

Emergency Assistance

  • SC Thrive- An application for various state and federal assistance.
  • If you need assistance with emergency funds for tuition, books, or personal expenses please reach out to our Student Wellness Services. This free service, through Tri-County Technical College, can help you with finding internal and external community resources to support you.
